On September 6, 1973, during the XIII Pan-American Congress of Gastroenterology in Buenos Aires, the Inter-American Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SIED) was founded.
The opportunity was considered propitious, since a large number of gastroenterologists were already dedicating themselves in a preferential and otherwise prominent way to endoscopy.
From then on SIED has had sustained growth, with 21 members representing all the countries of the American continent, and the absolute success of the Pan-American Congress, which continues to grow in number of participants at each edition.
Dr. Horacio Rubio was nominated the first president of the SIED (1973-1975). Later, he was elected president of WEO (World Endoscopy Organization).
Since then, the most prominent gastroenterologists in Latin America have presided over the SIED, such as those who have governed their destinies in recent years:
- 2016-20 Dr. Asadur Jorge Tchekmedyian (Uruguay)
- 2016-18 Dr. Julio Pereira Lima (Brasil)
- 2014-16 Dr. Fabian Emura (Colombia)
- 2012-14 Dr. Horacio Rubio (Argentina)
- 2010-12 Dr. Jorge Orillac (Panamá)
- 2008-10 Dr. Carlos Robles Jara (Ecuador)
- 2006-08 Dr. Juan Miguel Abdó (México)
- 2004-06 Dr. Plutarco Restituyo (República Dominicana)
